As a Teacher

Someone once asked E. Stanley Jones, the great missionary-statesman, how he helped so many young people become great Christians and missionaries. His reply:“I simply put a big crown over their heads, and help them to grow into it.”

That is what I love to do as a teacher. Teachers are people who help others “get it.” I want to plant trees I do not sit under. I delight in watching those I teach graduate, go out to minister in amazing ways, take great risks for Christ, and enjoy the wonder of His hand on their lives.

Of all the things I do: write, speak, lead, even play music, none matters as much to me as teaching. I may preach, but I am a teacher. I write some, but only as it helps me better to teach. Give me a class full of young adults and I am a happy man.The amazing thing is I not only get to teach, but I get to teach about the GOSPEL, the greatest news in the history of the universe! With all due respect to those who teach important subjects like Math, Science, or others, nothing compares to teaching what I teach. And if anything could rival that, I get to teach the greatest students on earth at Southeastern. God is good!Subjects I teach include (Go to www.sebts.edu and check out faculty webpages to see my syllabi for a given semester):

  • Evangelism
  • Prayer and Spiritual Awakenings
  • Supervised Ministry
  • Women and Evangelism
  • Personal Evangelism
  • Itinerant Ministry
  • Church Growth
  • Personal Evangelism

ONLY AT SOUTHEASTERN…
  • Only at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary can you find the following:
  • Only at Southeastern can you find a professor who loves snakes almost as much as people, who keeps a collection of exotic herps and locally caught specimens (he even recently caught a water mocassion!); and a professor of evangelism who along with his colleagues regularly takes his students out during class time to share Christ and lead others to him.
  • By the way, we also offer innovative courses in church planting, sports evangelism, and reaching the unchurched.
  • Only at Southeastern can you find professors in subjects like New Testament and Old Testament who are world class scholars, but also have a love for the practical side of their disciplines, including missions and evangelism–David Alan Black, Andreas Kostenberger, and others.
  • Only at Southeastern will you find a faculty of competent scholars and avid churchmen, of students who literally will go anywhere on earth to share Christ, where chapel services fill the campus with zealous worship and biblical preaching, and only at Southeastern will you find a campus with such a level passion and a sense of urgency to get the gospel to the ends of the earth.
