Alvin,
Greetings. We haven't spoken since my days on the SEBTS board but I remember you fondly and follow you in social networks. You are truly worth my time and I thank you for that.
I agree with your assessment whole-heartedly and see everywhere the reactions to it. But, few of those reactions hinge so exclusively on the teaching and preaching of the word and the demonstration of the power of the gospel. The organic church, the emergent church, the Purpose Driven Church, etc. may be seeking to medicate symptoms rather than cure the problem. Perhaps we are really seeing in the "institutional" church is the famine of the word that Amos mentioned. I would like to blame some of it on Finney and some of it on the 1950's institutional church expansion but truly the blame falls on the pastors, me included, who sought the expansion of the institution rather than the proclamation of the kingdom. Thanks for the article and all it has given me to think about.

PS I am linking it to my blog.

Great message and challenge. I don't often comment on the SBC, but it seems as if our pride of winning the inerrancy battle has made us a little lax in making disciples and sharing the faith. As if merely believing the Bible will make it happen. We have to do the Bible as well. There should be no difference between loving God's Word and loving to minister to people, but our statistics seem to show it. Appreciate reading your blog and books, they never fail to challenge me to grow.

Dr. Reid,

I really appreciate your thoughts on this matter. I agree that superficial faith is overwhelmingly present in many of our churches and in fact in many of our own lives. This is a subject that has been a burden of my own heart for several weeks now, and the timing of your release of this article is obviously Spirit led.

My Prayer: Lord help me to lead an authentic life of faith that is completely sold out to the cause of Christ and the ministry of the Gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit, and let our churches be filled with those who do the same.

Thank You!
