Hey Mark,
Thanks for the comment. Of course we should not give up on a generation. I would argue that Southern Baptists did not actually go after the GenXers who need Christ, however. I have taught many, many GenXers who passionately follow Jesus. It just seems from where I sit (not an empirical study) that the people who complain the loudest without offering solutions come from that demographic. I would also add that the numbers who truly will leave, again in my own opinion, are much smaller than the rhetoric.
I am grateful that the conversation is ongoing about this. We who are lifers in the SBC and older should never sit on our laurels. I read something Johnny Hunt said about that in a press release the other day, noting we are being described more and more along the lines of the mainline denominations. Not a good thing.
My point about those under 25 is this: All of us must make decisions about ministry focus. Some passionately love senior adults. Some adore childrens ministry. God has given me much favor with those under 25. I am not ignoring the rest, but that will be my own focus. Hope that helps a bit.

"Some younger ministers who want to or are leaving are GenXers. Not to be a big proponent of generational studies, but if you are not careful you will prove the pundits right. After all they call those in your generation slackers, complainers, uncooperative, cynical, relativistic, things like that."

"I am giving my life to the next generation, in particular those under 25."

"Julie is a Millennial, and I have great hope in her generation!"

-Just wondering which is worse; quiting a convention, or an entire generation? And, no - I didn't miss your point. Hopefuly, I haven't made your point either.

I get far more responses to my posts on my facebook than my website because I am far more interactive there. But I wanted to share with my non-facebook friends an encouraging post from Julie, a recent UNC grad whom I have watched spread her wings and soar for the glory of God. She is preparing to head to Asia in the IMB's journeyman program. Here is what she said:
agree with all that you said, but I also wanted to point out the incredible missions organization called the International Mission Board, something that most take for granted, but that is only made possible by the cooperative program of the SBC. It is the largest and I'd say, most sound and supportive Christian missions sending agency in the world, and is in a position to enable Christians to go to places and do things that they'd NEVER be able to do if they had to keep coming home and raising support every couple years. The
SBC is also heading up relief efforts that are blessing the world in ways no other organization can do - of course, these aren't the things the "social justice" gen-xers talk about when they complain about the convention and would prefer to buy a homeless man lunch than to contribute to a giant movement of God that is happening to bless the world. It is time that the younger generation analyze what is truly causing them to turn away. True, some of the older generation do not think like them and dress like them and listen to the same music as them, but since when was the church meant to be homogeneous? In myself, I see pride as the culprit that keeps us from learning from our elders and humbly being raised up to contribute our new ideas in a way that would profit the body as a whole.

When I think about "social justice" I think of how the Southern Baptists were the first people to get relief to the people of Banda-Aceh Indonesia. Or the ones who brought the hope of the gospel to the Earthquake victims. How could they do that? Because they were already there, due to the support of Southern Baptists and their contributions to the cooperative program and Lottie Moon.
Thanks for this post, Dr. Reid!
Julie is a Millennial, and I have great hope in her generation!

Thank you for your post.

I particularly appreciated your last point about loving a little challenge.

There has definitely been a lot of media buzz about leaving the SBC. And this probably has to top them all:

Long, but well worth the time to read. Thank you! I am not a Southern Baptist but I can identify with many of your thoughts. These same kinds of things can apply to the quick exodus so many churches see as well.

Thank you for your commitment and ministry.
