Check This Out–Between the Times

One of the links below on my site for some time has been to “Between the Times.” If you keep up with blogville you know from Nathan Finn’s fine site that Between the Times has a new focus.  If you have not checked it out I highly encourage you to do so. David Nelson, my friend and dean at Southeastern, just wrote a very nice piece on what is right with the SBC. In so doing he provides I think a helpful template for recognizing also what is wrong.  For those of us who see the need to change, we should follow Dean Nelson in doing so in the context of seeing so much that is good. Further, President Danny Akin gave a stirring report at the SBC regarding the Great Commission Resurgence. My President is in my view the most significant leader in the convention today. Note: my saying so is in no means to be construed as kissing up; we were friends before he was my president, and I am just cocky enough to believe I could get a job if I had to anyway (smile), so my compliments come out of a genuine belief that he is in the Kingdom for such a time as this. He is an even better father than he is a leader, which on certain days makes me just a little mad that one man can be so effective, unlike knuckleheads like me who seem adroit at few things if any. You can read his report and be encouraged as well. We are in an ecotone, a transitory time in which decisions made that affect many in a short span will have a large impact for a long while.  I am grateful to work with men of God who have both a great mind and a great heart. I can say without fear of contradiction that I teach at a Great Commission seminary.  I believe this gives us a great accountability and a heavy responsibility. I hope all who read this will pray for all of us who serve the Most High here in Wake Forest, and at all our seminaries for that matter. I am extremely excited about the future!

I’d be honored if you’d check out my take on Resolution #6 on Regenerate Church Membership. In a time when I’m hearing too many young pastors saying, “I don’t care who’s going out the back door. I’m only concerned with getting people in the front door.” The resolution is courageous. Thus even more reason to be hopeful about our denomination and the unity of our faith.
