Recently Josh finished his freshman year at our college. He made a discovery this year–while reading has never been a passion, he found that books expressing great ideas, such as Plato’s Republic and Homer’s Illiad (I fear the only Homer many young adults know has the last name of Simpson), actually make for good reading.I have always loved to read. I am not much for fiction. But I devour non-fiction, whether by Christians or not. So while I sit in Myrtle Beach suffering at a singles retreat with the great Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, I brought a few books along. Here is a list of those I will at least start reading:
- Tim Keller. The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism. I have already started this one and am fascinated.Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
- Nelson Searcy. Launch: Starting a New Church from Scratch. I know Nelson from his days here with the NCBSC. I realize I must be more aware of church planting issues if we are to reach America, so I am reading a lot on this subject.
- Ed Stetzer. Planting Missional Churches. This one is a no-brainer. Can’t wait to read it.
- Nelson Searcy. Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church
- Nancy Pearcey and Phillip Johnson. Total Truth: Liberating Christianity from Its Cultural Captivity. I know I should have read this one, but was too busy devouring C Wright’s The Mission of God (well that is my excuse).
- Mark Driscoll. Vintage Jesus: Timeless Answers to Timely Questions (Relit Theology). I just like reading Driscoll
|
- Bob Roberts. The Multiplying Church: The New Math for Starting New Churches. I spent a little time with Bob at a conference where we spoke in Wisconsin a few years back. I figure it is time I smell a little more of what he is stewing.
- Joel Rainey. Planting Churches in the Real World. Joel has recently become a friend, and I really like books that relate to the real world. So I will enjoy this one.
Feel free to help me educate myself by suggesting other books I should read. If a plumber’s tools are his pipe wrenches, and a carpenter’s his hammer and tape, the minister’s tools are his books. |
