Show and Share the Gospel: Servant Evangelism available now!
Many years ago my friend David Wheeler invited me to speak at the annual evangelism conference of the Indiana Baptist Convention. I was happy to do so as I had been the evangelism director before David in the Hoosier state, and because David was a close friend who had earned his PhD in evangelism as I had a few years earlier.
At this conference David had others speaking as well. One was a pastor in Ohio named Steve Sjogren. Steve had just written a stellar book called Conspiracy of Kindness (I highly encourage you to get it) where he talked about the concept of Servant Evangelism.
I was blessed by Steve’s message and intrigued by the concept. I soon began using the idea of intentional personal evangelism shared in the context of acts of kindness in my classes. We saw many come to CHrist through free car washes and other means. I spoke in many churches on the topic. In particular I spoke two years in a row at the First Baptist Church of Charlotte, where after the message hundreds of church members went into the community showing and sharing Christ under the banner of “First Loves Charlotte.” The Charlotte Observer gave a full page spread on the day.
Servant evangelism offers a practical way to get ordinary believers engaged in sharing Christ in a way that is winsome and encouraging. I have seen the gospel shared with homosexuals, Jehovahs Witnesses, and others who admitted they would not have listened to the gospel but that we showed compassion to them first.
The same friend mentioned above, David Wheeler, now teaches at Liberty University and Liberty Seminary. We just wrote a small, 80 page book on Servant Evangelism. We have taken the concept introduced by our friend Steve Sjogren — okay, popularized by Steve, as we think the idea is as original as the New Testament — and put together a short book for busy pastors, student pastors, and other leaders to teach servant evangelism to those you lead. Whether you are in college ministry or a parachurch ministry, a church planter or a veteran pastor, we are convinced this is a powerful way to get your folks focused on the gospel and sharing it as well. It’s also a great resource for home school families to get engaged in your neighborhood or for Christian schools to involve your students in outreach in your community or through mission trips. Speaking of that, it is also a great way to equip a team heading out on a mission trip in either the U.S. or abroad.
The book is now available on amazon. Order print copies here for 5.99 and kindle version for only 2.99 here. If you want to get signed copies you can order from me directly at a cost of 5.00 each. Just email me firstname.lastname@example.org. Perhaps you are a director of missions or state convention leader looking for a gift to give your pastors or other leaders. Here is a great one!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the book and would encourage you to write a review at amazon. I am committed to writing short, focused books like this one to help believers know and live the gospel.
